Construction Technician Trainee
Southwestern Virginia Gas Company is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Construction Technician Trainee. This is a full-time non-exempt position with benefits including company-provided uniforms with free laundry service. Pre-employment drug screen required.

Careers

This entry-level position will entail training and qualification for performance of the following duties:

  • Reading natural gas meter routes on a monthly basis.
  • Installing and maintaining natural gas pipelines and associated facilities.
  • Excavating, shoring, backfilling and restoring disturbed areas.
  • Completing natural gas service turn-offs and turn-ons at customer premises.
  • Patrolling natural gas facilities and responding to abnormal operating conditions.
  • Locating and marking buried pipelines in response to va811 tickets.
  • Performing natural gas leak investigations.
  • Responding to natural gas emergencies.
  • Performing various other tasks as assigned and directed.

Required Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License with an insurable record.
  • Operation of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment.
  • Must have the physical strength to load and unload heavy pieces of equipment and supplies to and from trucks and/or trailers.
  • Ability to smell odorant used to detect gas leaks.
  • Ability to work Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 5:00PM with the potential of occasionally working nights, holidays, and on-call emergencies. Must reside within 25 miles of Martinsville, VA for emergency call-outs.


Rate of Pay:

Newly-hired technicians will receive hands-on experience and formal training as part of a two-year apprenticeship program. Beginning wage is $19/hour with potential increases based on performance and successful progression through the program. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program technicians may earn $22/hour with the potential for merit-based wage increases on an annual basis thereafter.
